Hi, Mark Bossert here, Top Local Lead Generation. We’re here with Gary Waight from DJ Boogie Shoes.com. How’re you doing this morning Gary?
Gary: I’m doing very well on this bright sunny day, how’re you?
Mark: I’m good. So we’re going to be talking about how to get the music you want for your wedding and I’m going to jump right in and I’m sure this is a question you get, can I pick the music I want to hear?
Gary: Yes, sure you can pick the music you want to hear. For brides and grooms that includes your cocktail, your dinner music, your entrance music, cake cutting, garter toss, first dance, as well as the last dances of the evening and archway if you choose. For corporate events that could include your cocktail, your dinner music, special requests and dance music and you know, sometimes clients like to control the dance music, so that’s no problem if you know your guests taste in music and that can work out really, really well. In some cases that can be a challenge too.
Mark: O.K. can I specify what I don’t want to hear?
Gary: Yes, you certainly can, that’s also part of the game. There are songs that some brides don’t want to hear, they don’t want to hear what they call sometimes ‘cheesy songs’, you know like Macarena or YMCA altho those are a lot of the fun songs because it’s a group oriented, it’s really fun to see your friend or your buddy get up there and do the YMCA and I have a few interactive things that I do that make it even more fun providing the bride and groom are open for that. Actually I’ve got a little story about that, that’s really interesting; last summer I was doing the Stanley Park Pavilion and I first met with this couple, they were a very young couple, she was Filipino and he was a Caucasian fellow, but she was like second generation Filipino and she had very specific requests that she wanted for the music. She wanted a lot of gangsta rap so this was really interesting because gangsta rap as you know can have a lot of profanity in it and it’s a certain style and she said Gary whatever you do, do not play YMCA, I hate the YMCA with a passion. I said o.k., o.k., but in the back of my mind, you know, having about 1,800 of these things underneath my belt I knew well o.k., probably half her guests are going to be Filipino, and they’re probably going to love songs like YMCA, you know the line dance type of things, conga and that kind of stuff and didn’t want to hear any of it, so that was really good and 2 or 3 times throughout the process I called her and said are you sure you want me to play these songs, there’s a lot of profanity in it and she said sure, sure, sure, so we get there and at the wedding there’s close to 300 people and about half of them are her side of the family, they’re all Filipino so we get started into the music for the evening and we started coming up with this gangsta rap with MF this and MF that and I had a crowd of about 20 Filipino people come around me and what is this and so I mentioned well, this is the list that the bride would like me to sing. Perhaps you would like to go talk to her, they swarmed her and I said are we still doing your songs? She said no, we’re playing what they want to hear so the first song up was YMCA and he was out, the groom was out in the lounge, in the area where your drinks are outside the dance hall and he heard it and he comes running in with his drink and within 5 seconds the Filipino grabbed him and hauled him a circle and he’s doing the YMCA. At the end of the night he says Gary, even tho you played the YMCA, I had a fantastic time, it was so much fun. So there’s a case where often times if you’re not connected with your audience, you know what your audience really, really want it can go a bit wrong for you. Luckily I have a lot of experience in these cases, we were able to switch smoothly and they basically saved the evening and bride and groom actually discovered that they really enjoy that kind of music in this situation, in a wedding type situation. So, you know the moral of the story is if you know your guests really well, go ahead and choose all the music for the dance music, if not maybe listen a little bit of your DJ’s experience and put a combination in there.
